The Wine buyers (Andrew and Dale) pick two wines each month for you that we love, and you will too. One white (or rose, or bubbly) and one red. The total value of wines will exceed $40, and the longer you sign up for, the better the deal! Our goal is to show excellent wines in a wide range of styles.   We only choose wines we have tasted and don’t base our choices on ratings.(Although we’ll often include them in the write-up)

Broc Cellars Love White, 2015, Madera, California
We love a Rhone style blend at Wine World, and this 90% Marsanne, 7% Rousanne, 3 % Viognier wine fits the bill. Broc Cellars focuses on site specific wines, all grapes are grown sustainably, organically, or biodynamically. The grapes for this wine come from “Love Ranch” The wines are fermented using native yeasts, naturally occurring on the skins and in the winery. Round full and floral, with flavors of honeysuckle and cantaloupe.
As I’ve said before and will say again, Rhone blends White or Red are extremely adaptable food wines, different elements of the blend will come out with different foods. Roussane, the majority grape in this blend goes particularly well with seafood, especially dishes that are fully spiced or smoked, also great match for almost any spicy asian dish. This will be great with a Roast Chicken!
These other suggestions I found online that while sipping this wine made me hungry! Smoked Trout Chowder, Crab Salad with Ginger and Dried Orange Peel, Creamy Cauliflower Pasta

The British wine magazine Decanter like this wine too!
91pts Decanter
“This crystal clear classic white Rhone blend is ripe with honeysuckle and peach mixed with warm marzipan and toasty flavors. It is succulent with touch of dried herbs and a waxy texture.”

Levendi Symphonia Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Napa Valley California
This was a mistake, a happy accident! Wetasted this and were given a price much too low for this wine. By the time the distributor caught the error, we’d already set it up for WINE CLUB. They graciously let us go ahead with the quoted price, as the mistake was theirs, so here we have a wonderful holiday surprise for you all.

Winemaker Alison Doran has been making wine in Napa for more than 30 years, and the Gianulias family has been involved in Napa wine since 1926. They focus on making big, extracted, lush wines, and Symphonia is a prime example.

Tastings.com gave this wine 92 points and the following description, which is accurate:
“Bright dark indigo color. Attractive aromas and flavors of caramelized fruits and nuts, berry pie a la mode, and chocolate rice bar with a satiny, bright, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and an effortless, appealing, medium-length dried cherries and toffee finish with fine tannins and light oak. A supple and attractive cabernet that will improve with time.”

I’ll add that this is classic Napa Cab, intense and extracted without being sweet. It’s great now, (just had my last sip) but couple years in the bottle will bring out some more sublte character, and if you grab an extra bottle (while we still have some!) and put it under the stairs for 10 years, you’ll be greatly rewarded!

As far as pairing… grilled meats! Especially Lamb. I’d reccomend a little honey, some rosemary and lots of garlic in the marinade. Slow cooked short ribs, anything with blue cheese… I’d might have this with grilled skirt steak, sliced about a quarter inch thick and spread a little Point Reyes Blue on when we eat it. Or maybe we’ll sit on the back porch with a box of crackers and a big wedge of Cambozola, maybe a little prosciutto and some sliced red onion for texture and spice! Yum!

For this Month’s WINE CLUB we have two great Wines for your Thanksgiving table!

Hugel Gewurztraminer 2013

At Wine World we always reccomend Gewurtztraminer as a perfect pairing with thanksgiving turkey. Alsatian Gewurtz is typically dry and full flavored, with a richness that tastes a little like lychee nut, a distinctive fruit. This wine also goes great with heavier aisian fare. These wines, including Alsatian Pinot Blanc and Riesling, age remarkably well, and develop really interesting and yummy character. The wines darken and the flavoprs become more intense over time. I recently had Gwurtz and Pinot Blanc from the late 80s that were amazing! The Hugel family has been making wine in Alsace since 1635.

Critical Acclaim:
90pts Wine Enthusiast
A sumptuously rich nose of musk, creamy peach and fragrant orchid precede a rounded, medium-dry palate of gentle, warm peach and plum. A pleasant bitter-honey edge lends even more grip to the textured midpalate. Savor this slowly and enjoy the tingling baking spices that enliven the palate.

From The Winery:
“The spice of Alsace and one of Famille Hugel’s signature wines. It is both aromatic and extroverted through its floral and spicy notes. Gewurztraminer is an invitation to accompany a variety of spicy Asian dishes as well as smoked salmon and strong cheeses.”

Julien Sunier Wild Soul VdF 2016
Julian Sunier is a well known producer of Gamay in Beaujolais. When hail destroyed a good portion of his crop in Regnie, he bought some gamay from another producer in Beaujolais and made a this wine, designated as a “Vin de France” as its composition doesn’t follow the rules. It’s all Gamay from old vines, 65yrs or older, which I belive shows in the intensity of the fruit. Wild Soul was aged on the lees in conrete eggs, no there’s no oak. We were struck by how delightful and different this wine is, bright cherry and rasberry flavors, almost candylike, but completely dry, and very “clean”. Wild Soul will be a great addition to your holiday table, a nice counterpoint to the bird, and a stellar match with cranberry sauce. I suspect it’ll even go well with pumpkin pie, although a nice Sauterne would be perfect… I’m getting hungry already!

We have a pair of French wines this month both from somewhat iconic producers, enjoy!

Louis Latour Mâcon-Lugny Les Genièvres 2015
2015 is known to be a stellar vintage in Burgundy, particularly for the reds. We tasted several burgundy’s with a representative for LaTour just recently and agreed this “little” white Burgundy was very yummy and a spectacular bargain.
100% Chardonnay (as is true of most white Burgundy) and unoaked.
I wouldn’t look to age this wine for a long period, drink it with pleasure within the next 3 or 4 years.
From the Latour webpage:
“The village of Lugny is located high up in the South of the Mâcon region. It has a great reputation for its white wines which has made Mâcon famous. It is well known that the village of Lugny, with its limestone soils and warm climate, produces the most coveted white wines of the region. The vineyard of « Les Genièvres » is one of the best. Maison Louis Latour selects the best grapes of this village, which thanks to its terroir, was the only village planted with Chardonnay 30 years ago.
Mâcon-Lugny “Les Genièvres” is crisp and yet still typically honeyed. The nose unveils aromas of lemon and green orchard fruit with notes of honeycomb. A clean dry, yet quite rich wine full of light lemon citrus and orchard fruits with nutty notes, it has an elegant smoothness with balanced fresh acidity and a lingering dry-almost honeyed finish. A good value quality white Burgundy that is drinking well now.
Food Pairing: Grilled fish – seafood – Comté cheese”

Château de Ségriés Lirac Cuvee Reservee 2015
50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 10% Mourvèdre
We’re big fans of wines from the Rhone Valley, they tend to be extremely adaptable for pairing with food, and tend to age remarkably well. I had a simple Guigal Cotes Du Rhone from 1995 last night and it was fabulous! This wine comes from Lirac, an appelation just across the river from Chateneuf Du Pape.
These grapes are from 80 year old vines and harvested by hand, and have no oak treatment.
Pairs well with Stews, Grilled meats, Game, Various cheeses, or almost anything else you’d drink a red wine with!
The Wine Advocate gave this wine 92pts.
“The 2015 Lirac Cuvee Reservee is a beauty. Notes of dried Provencal garrigue, cedar, blackberries, blueberries and roasted herbs all jump from the glass of this concentrated, rich and seriously endowed Lirac that has a stacked mid-palate, rocking levels of concentration, ripe tannin and a great finish. It’s another superstar wine to drink over the coming 7-8 years.”

Wine World Third Thursday October 19th 2017 Wines:

Bocelli, Pinot Grigio
Veneto, Italy
2016
Andrea Bocelli loves his white wines, and it shows in their delightfully crisp, complex Pinot Grigio. Grown in the green hills of the Colli Euganei in Veneto, the vines are thick and knotty, averaging about 15 years old, and yielding just enough grapes to make only one bottle of wine per plant. One bottle! With aromas of fresh Meyer lemon, mint, white flowers and sea salt, this wine is zesty, delicious, and made with integrity. Lemon Chicken Piccata, Grilled Halibut with Cilantro Garlic Butter.

Barnard Griffin, Fume Blanc
Columbia Valley, WA
2015
Sauvignon Blanc. Aromas of herb, grass, pear and citrus lead to sleek fruit flavors. It shows a lot of elegance but lacks concentration. The 2015 vintage is packed with orange zest, lime, Asian pear andhoneydew melon flavors and aromas. Ultimately refreshing! Finishes with a juicy, cleansing aftertaste. Enjoy this crisp, sunny white as a stand-alone or paired with shellfish or mildly-flavored appetizers.

Montinore, Borealis
Willamette Valley, OR
2015
34% Gewurztraminer, 30% Muller-Thurgau, 28% Pinot Gris, and 8% Riesling. Mouthwatering and multi-dimensional, this perennial crowd pleaser is a blend of cool-climate whites.. Intensely aromatic, with a nose of tropical flowers, ripe kiwi and melon, the silky soft palate is brimming with rose petals, pink grapefruit, mango and white nectarine then finishes on a high, clean note of bright key lime. Organic. Spicy Foods, Fish, White Meats.

Bila-Haut by Chapoutier, Cotes du Roussillon Villages Rouge
Languedoc-Roussillon, France
2015
Berry jam up front, followed by darker plum through the palate peppered with subtle notes of licorice. Velvety tannins offer grippy structure without hindering approachability. Bila Haut is a big boy in Chapoutier’s lineup, showing plenty of black fruit and spice, Pair with a nice cut of beef or Mediterranean food.
RP93 The Wine Advocate
The jaw-dropper in the lineup was the quality of the 2015 Haut Cotes de Roussillon Villages les Vignes de Bila Haut. While the entry level wine from this estate, the quality here is incredible, especially at the price point. Made from 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Carignan from a mix of the estate’s terroirs, aged in concrete tanks and stainless steel, it offers a rich, concentrated and serious feel to go with fabulously pure notes of blackberries, black raspberries, crushed rock and melted licorice. Thick, unctuous and luxuriously textured, this will certainly be the greatest vintage of this cuvee to date.
WS90Wine Spectator
This has finesse, with an iron core surrounded by blackberry, cassis, plum and garrigue flavors. Full tannins offer structure, with details of olive and bay leaf that linger into the savory finish. Drink now through 2020.

Jlohr, Los Osos Merlot
Paso Robles, California
2014
The 2014 J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot presents a mature red color with a raspberry hue. Plummy fruit aromas are integrated with a chocolaty barrel signature of mocha and baking spice. Whole berry fermentation with a generous use of Malbec in the blend accentuates the fine tannins, bright fruit tones and lengthy finish. This Merlot is dark in the glass, with lots of oak, vanilla and caramel aromas against a black-cherry and chocolate-cake backdrop on the nose. Soft and chalky tannins frame the sip, where blueberry, vanilla and chocolate-cream flavors prove lush and inviting. Delicious with summer grilled sausages or herb-roasted chicken.
WE 90 Best Buy

Silver Totem, Cabernet Sauvignon
Columbia Valley, Washington
2014
Fruit from the Horse Heaven Hills and Walla Walla Valley, including Malbec and Syrah. Dark purple hue and aromas of black currant, plum sauce, caramel and crushed green peppercorns. Recommended pairings include wild game, roasted pork, grilled vegetables or ribeye with vegetable puree.
Gold Medal, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
