Wine World Wines, First Friday, May 17th, 2018:

Laurent Miquel Cinsault Syrah Rose 2017 Pays d’Oc France
70% Cinsault, 30% Syrah
Characterized by a beautiful pale pink robe, this Cinsault Syrah epitomizes the best of southern French rosés with fruit-forward flavours and perfect balance. The Cinsault adds a fresh, smooth texture to the blend and the Syrah reveals delicious red fruit flavours with a dramatic colour. Delicious on its own or with salads, cold meats, chicken dishes and barbecues. You can even try it with shellfish or light spicy foods!

Chamisal Stainless Chardonnay 2015 Edna Valley Central Coast California
Tropical notes of juicy Satsuma, ripe kiwi and mango are highlighted by aromas of candied lemon peel, apple blossom and refreshing minerality. The palate supports the nose, revealing the Stainless winemaking with its round, weighty mouthfeel. Crisp acidity and flavors of white nectarine, papaya and key lime pie round out the clean, lingering finish. Baked whitefish, Grilled Tarragon Chicken.

Gouguenheim Valle Escondido Torrontes 2016 Mendoza Argentina
Bright approachable nose of honeysuckle, canned peaches, Asian pear, vanilla bean, slight geranium. Light bodied, almost airy, but with reasonably strong pear, lemon, tangerine, peach, and cantaloupe notes. Mildly saline and perfumed, with gentle acidity and some minerals. Geranium floral elements more prominent in the finish than on the nose.

Enrique Mendoza La Tremenda Monastrell 2016 Alicante Spain
Bright ruby-red in color, this wine shows expressive notes of fresh black cherries and red berries mingled with hints of sweet spice, toast and cocoa. On the palate, this accessible red shows silky texture, liveliness and long length. Pair it with pork chops, Kobe beef, or parmesan-crusted asparagus tips. Wine Advocate 92pts

Tormentoso Old Vine Cinsault 2015 Paarl South Africa
A ruby-red Cinsaut showing faint spice, cinnamon and red cherries on the nose, followed through by strawberries and cream on the palate. This juicy wine with silky berry-fruit flavours is backed by earthy, cigar-box-aromas and soft oak tannins. Will pair nicely with a wide range of dishes; try with margherita pizza, seafood pasta, cottage pie and spareribs.

Zin-phomaniac Old Vine Reserve Zinfandel 2012 Sonoma, California
The grapes for this old-vine wine come from various appellations within Sonoma, including Dry Creek and Sonoma Valley. The Zin is blended with mixed blacks and Mourvèdre. Aromas of tobacco, cola, plum and clove. Wild raspberry, plum, cherry and molasses flavors are complemented by white pepper, anise and clove flavors on the spicy lingering finish.

The Wine buyers (Andrew and Dale) pick two wines each month for you that we love, and you will too. One white (or rose, or bubbly) and one red. The total value of wines will exceed $40, and the longer you sign up for, the better the deal! Our goal is to show excellent wines in a wide range of styles. We only choose wines we have tasted and loved. We don’t base our choices on ratings. (Although we’ll often include them, for your reference, in the write-up)

I hope everyone is enjoying the odd varietals, we have great fun with them. A customer came in yesterday, and was doing the Wine Century challenge with the goal of tasting at least 100 specific varietals. We’ve gotten her about half way there with some fairly obscure grapes, and will be trying to find the rest. This months red, a Pais, (aka “Mission”) wasn’t even on the list!

Illahe Vineyards and Winery, Viognier 2016 Willamette Valley, Oregon 20.99

We love Viognier at Wine World. The varietal is best known for its use in the Rhone valley as part of the white blend, and with many of the reds. In small percentages adds a little viscosity, some floral notes, and, believe it or not, color. (I’m told that there is a reaction between the Viognier and the reds that intensifies the color!)

Illahe is proud to produce their wines as naturally and sustainably as possible. They do not even irrigate their mature plants, and use a team of Percheron Draft horses to mow and to bring the grapes to the winery during harvest. This is an amazing value considering that this wine is hand picked and hand sorted, and you’d be hard pressed to find a Willamette Valley Viognier of this quality at such a reasonable price. (though it says on the bottle these grapes were gently pressed, Ha! See what I did there?)

This wine really tastes natural, bright, fresh, and clean with just a hint of sweetness. Crisp gala apple flavors and a touch of honey, maybe slightly under ripe pear. This will be delicious with greek yogurt, blended with a little honey and mixed with fruit.

Here’s what the winery has to say:
“The 2016 Illahe Viognier leaps from the glass with expressive stone fruit, and floral aromas of apricot, tangerine, honey blossom and wet stone. The palate is layered with peach compote, banana peel, and lavender with a touch of peppercorn. Mouth-watering acidity and an off-dry palate makes this wine a crowd pleaser.”

Bouchon Family Wines, País Salvaje 2016 Maule Valley, Chile 23.99

Now in the fourth generation of winemaking, the Bouchon family began their Chilean adventure when Emile Bouchon, in 1887, at the age of 22, was hired as a wine consultant for the Vigouroux Vineyard.

Pais, (also known as “Mission”) was the first European grape varietal planted in the New World. It was brought by missionaries from Spain and was used to make sacramental wine. It’s hardy, loves hot and dry climates, and is resistant to drought. Eventually it was displaced throughout most of the Americas in favor of varietals considered more desirable.

In Chile these vines grow up the trees and drape themselves over the foliage, requiring the pickers to use ladders during the harvest. The grapes used to make this wine are grown on vines that are an average of 120 years old. There is no oak used, all naturally occurring yeast, and the juice is unfiltered.

I love translucent light garnet color of this wine in the glass. To my nose Salvaje smells and tastes a bit like an old-school pinot noir. It has the cleanliness and brightness of a lighter burgundy, spicy raspberry and cherry with a touch of barnyard and a hint of smoke to ground the wine and give it a delightful bit of complexity that lingers. It just keeps getting better and better!

This wine screams “Afternoon Barbecue”… Throw some Italian sausage and mixed veggies on the grill, put a slight chill on the bottle and you’ll be good to go. On their website Buchon suggests: “An ideal wine to accompany Chilean dishes, such as empanadas, prietas and huaso rolls.”

Ok I’m getting hungry now, time for lunch!

90pts Wine Enthusiast

Terra D’Oro Petite Sirah 2015 Amador County, California
The color is almost black, with lots of dark berry and black pepper aromas. Flavors are of pepper, meat and boysenberries. Bold and spicy with mineral details and refined tannins. A dark and opulent aubergine color in the glass, the wine has a powerful nose of sweet oak vanillin and bright, juicy fruit. The palate is focused with crisp and captivating flavors of ripe blueberry and jammy blackberry cobbler, with a warm oaky spice note on the finish. For a delightful and mouth-watering pairing, serve this wine with roast tenderloin of wild Boar, or baked root vegetable lasagna. Tannins make the mouthfeel thick and layered. A lingering finish attests to its considerable concentration.

Domaine des Aubuisieres Bernard Fouquet Cuvée de Silex Vouvray 2016

Vouvray is usually associated with the semi-sweet wine made from Chenin Blanc grown there.
This wine is Chenin Blanc, but dry, and wonderfully delicious!

The soil where this particular wine comes from is Clay-siliceous, hence the name “Cuvée de Silex”

Here’s the blurb from the Importer’s web site:
“Bernard Fouquet, a quiet-spoken man, is making some of the most serious Vouvray you’ll find these days. He is regarded in France and the international press as one of the top Vouvray producers. No one succeeds better than Bernard in capturing the mineral tones unique to Vouvray’s soil, with the marvelous balance of explosive fruit and titillating sensation of the Chenin Blanc grape.”
and about the production
“A sec (dry) Vouvray from 2 flint soil parcels. Entirely hand-harvested and only indigenous yeasts used. Fermented and matured in stainless steel thermo-regulated vats.”

Citrus, green melon, touch of almond, a hint of honey, minerals, and a great acidity that grounds the wine, yummy!
Try it with the Green Hill cheese we have in the shop, Grilled Chicken, or spicy fish cakes.

Praxis Lagrein Central Coast California 2008

Only 600 cases of this wine were produced.

Long time WINE CLUB members may remember that we used the Praxis Gewurtztraminer a couple of years back. Here’s another grape with a funny name from this winery. Lagrein is traditionally grown in Northern Italy and produces a big chewy wine with high acidity and tannins. It’s a ” this cool climate, high-elevation red varietal is a 500 year-old cross between Teroldego and Pinot Noir”

At 10 years old this 2008 is drinking fabulously now. Don’t be afraid to decant the wine and let it get some air for an hour or so, but be sure to taste it when you open it so you can see how it evolves.

This wine will turn your lips purple!
From the Praxis webpage:
“The color of the wine is saturated purple with red highlights. Aromas of coco nibs and mulberry jam rise from the glass with hints of mocha. On the palate, flavors of crushed black fruit, blueberry and cranberry are predominant. The wine is smooth with mouth filling tannins and a long, soft, plush finish evidencing the Pinot Noir heritage.”

balance.
Catfish Vineyard was planted in 1901, the wine is a field blend of a number of varieties, including small amounts of carignan, alicante bouschet, cabernet sauvignon , petite sirah, and cinsault. Having more than one variety assured the old-time vintners that they would have some grapes to harvest regardless of the spring frosts or autumn storms.
